Skin tanning is a condition that can be admirable to some people and completely uncomfortable to others. Although some people may get a gold skin appearance after a skin tan, you can be directly opposite and in some cases can experience painful red burns.
Most of the people are wondering why do they have skin tan but the fact is that it is the body’s mechanism to signal you that damage is being done on your skin.
Causes of Skin Tanning
Some of the most common causes of skin tan include:
1. Sunlight and radiation
Sunlight is very important in our lives but excessive exposure to direct sunlight can be fatal. Sometimes when you are out in the scorching sun makes you feel like you are being bombed by the radiation.
Sun rays contain UVA, UVB and UVC but the first two sun rays are the most harmful and are the ones that makes your skin tan.
2. DNA damage
After the harmful rays of the sun penetrate any skin, they end up damaging your DNA. This is the reason why humans have melanin to prevent the skin against any damages and at the same time protect your skin against any damages.
What this means is that when the UVA rays enters the skin, they makes the melanin to darken and eventually appear like a skin tan to prevent severe skin damages.
3. Overproduction of melanin
There are some instances when the body tries to protect the skin against sunburns and in the process produces a lot of melanin. This is what makes it tan.
Melanin is to ensure that the skin is protected against any damages from the sun rays. As the skin becomes more damaged, it produces more melanin and the extra melanin causes some people to tan.
Symptoms of Skin Tanning
Following are some of the common symptoms:
4. The skin feels warm or hot to the touch
After the skin is damaged, you are likely to feel as if the skin is warmer or hotter than normal. This is as the result of the recovery process and the burns from the sun.
After the skin is damaged, then your body will be trying to recover and eventually produce more energy which makes you feel hot or warmer.
5. Swelling
Although this is not a common symptom of skin tanning, there are some people who experience skin swelling after their skin is burnt by the sun. This swelling is a signal that the skin is really damaged. For this reason, you are required to take appropriate measures to correct the condition.
6. Pinkness or redness
Different people respond differently to skin tanning. There are some whose skin will turn red while others will turn gold after the tanning process. Some others may turn pink and darken as the damage persists.
7. Other symptoms include:
- Pain, tenderness and itching on any part of the body that was exposed to the sunlight.
- Small fluid-filled blisters, which could burst and get very painful.
- Some other people experience headaches, fever, nausea and fatigue in a situation where the burn is severe.
